During CEDAW’s 25th anniversary campaign in 2006, FAFIA called on the Canadian government to eliminate the live-in requirement of the Live-In Caregiver and Domestic Program and to grant women under this program landed status upon arrival. These recommendations are echoed in a recent report by Salimah Valiani, of the Canadian Labour Congress.

This report, Analysis, Solidarity, Action – a Worker’s Perspective on the Increasing Use of Migrant Labour in Canada, discusses the problems facing all migrant workers, including live-in caregivers, and the failure of the Canadian government to ensure that they are protected against exploitation. In order to counter discrimination and the super-exploitation of temporary migrant workers, the report calls on the federal government to implement a number of recommendations.
