"Withdraw the Public Sector Equitable Compensation Act" Declare Governor General Award Recipients and Women’s Rights Experts

February 26, 2009 (Ottawa) 12 recipients of the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Person's Case and more than ninety experts on human rights law and women's rights have signed a letter calling on Prime Minister Harper to withdraw the Public Sector Equitable Compensation Act. The PSEC Act was introduced as part of Budget 2009.

Opposition parties declare support for new pay equity law

All three opposition parties spoke out today in favour of a new federal pay equity law after meeting with representatives of the Pay Equity Network, a coalition of central labour bodies, unions, women’s organizations and provincial pay equity groups, who were in Ottawa to lobby for a new law.

On average, women still earn less than men regardless of their occupation, age or education. Today, women earn 72.5 cents for every dollar a man earns. For women of colour, Aboriginal women, and women with a disability, the wage gap is even greater.

Government response to the recommendations issued by the Standing Committee on the Status of Women

The recommendations by the Committee address pay equity, parental benefits, gender based analysis, and Status of Women Canada’s Women’s Program.

Pay equity commitment needs legislative action now

Liberal Cabinet Ministers who have expressed their support for pay equity will be under scrutiny in the upcoming weeks to see if they make good on their commitment.

Letter Action Overview

In October of this year, the Supreme Court of Canada found in NAPE vs. Newfoundland and Labrador that it was acceptable for provincial governments to violate women's equality and human rights if they claim an impending fiscal crisis. Women in Newfoundland and Labrador, and indeed across the country, reject this dangerous precedent.

Women Want Their Money Back

On the 56 th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , women's groups from across Canada are urging Prime Minister Paul Martin to show respect for women's human rights in a very concrete way. They are asking the Prime Minister and the Government of Canada to join with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to pay back to women health care workers $80 million that is owed to them.
