“2006 will mark the 25th anniversary of Canada’s ratification of the most comprehensive international treaty on women’s rights, the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Canada ratified it in 1981 with the consent of all provinces and territories.
If you are elected, will you and your party take concrete and immediate measures to ensure that Canada fully upholds its commitments to women under this international agreement?”
As a consequence of the expected early election call, FAFIA is postponing its scheduled CEDAW event on Parliament Hill for December 7th. This event was to mark the approaching 25th anniversary of Canada’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). FAFIA expects to reschedule this event and will keep you updated as to the new date and time once it has been set.
Instead, FAFIA has developed a CEDAW election tool on some of the key issues to be featured in our national election campaign. As a broad alliance of women’s organizations and human rights groups throughout the country, we will be mobilizing for policy changes related to CEDAW in six key areas of significance to women’s lives. Member groups will be active during the election and beyond in achieving these changes.
